His brand of health schemes and hucksterism; phony religious, medical and academic degrees were enough to keep municipal, state, and federal regulatory agencies at bay for three decades. Yet little is known of those who lost hope, lost their resources, and lost valuable time in managing their personal health issues while being distracted by his misrepresentations. Hendricks, MD, a US Army Doctor who served in World War I and World War II and became one of the most renowned respiratory physicians of the 20th Century. Col. Hendricks influenced the modernization of military medicine, gas warfare defense, and battlefield medical evacuation. His influence on modern medical education is seen every day by board certified internists treating patients with diseases of the chest. Col. Hendricks co-founded the American College of Chest Physicians, the current professional organization that certifies pulmonologists and other physicians that specialize in diseases of the chest. Dr. Hendricks grew up dreaming of becoming a professional football player at the close of the 19th Century. That led him to play eight years of collegiate football at two major universities, Miami University (Ohio) and the University of Cincinnati. After graduating he relocated to the southwest to treat tubercular patients. Dr. Hendricks then found himself immersed in the Mexican Revolution as a result of his relationship with one of his patients, Pancho Villa. Following his efforts at treating the wounded during the Battle of Juarez in 1911, he joined his friend General John J. Pershing in the American Expeditionary Force in France where he served the as the general's gas warfare officer during World War I. Dr. Hendricks was also involved in treating the initial outbreak of the Spanish Influenza / Pandemic of 1918 that killed or incapacitated more soldiers on both sides than in action during World War I. Dr. Hendricks' love of football lives on today in the classic collegiate bowl contest that he developed and administered, the Sun Bowl; the second oldest college bowl game.

Love of Football - C.
