The Borderland Princess - Consort to Criminals, Revolutionaries Mercenaries and Patriots
The Sheldon Hotel - The Borland Princess
The Borderland Princess entertained some of the most famous and infamous people of history. Historically significant characters as various American Presidents, military leaders, federal agents, the rebel outlaw Pancho Villa, and journalists from around the world were among the hundreds who fell under her mystical spell. Shadows of the legends of Wyatt Earp, John Selman, Billy The Kid, Senator Albert B Fall, and Jeff Milton lurked in alleys of this dusty west Texas town. In the early 1880s, four great railroads laid tracks towards El Paso’s bars, gaming houses, and bordellos. The Sheldon Hotel played a commanding role in the Mexican Revolution. This was a wicked place and time; and the Princess was right in the middle of it all.
In 1963 The Sheldon was renamed to the Plaza Hotel and later closed in 1991. The property was purchased by El Paso businessman Paul Foster in 2008. The hotel was renovated at a cost of $78 million and reopened in June 2020 as The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park.
